Anti-Oppression Working Group
This is an opportunity for NASW members to advance anti-racist, anti-oppressive practice in Nebraska. Please contact NASW-NE Executive Director, jvandercoy.naswne@socialworkers.org to engage in this working group. Or complete the form below.
The Anti-Oppression Working Group is a part of the NASW-Nebraska Chapter. Our mission is to increase our chapter’s social work commitment to the value of social justice. We work with NASW-NE members to ensure that social workers in Nebraska have the necessary knowledge and skills to create a more equitable world by challenging systemic oppression impacting vulnerable people in our state. We envision helping social workers to constructively identify, evaluate and address oppressive dynamics in our profession, and more broadly our society. In this way, we work toward fulfilling the primary mission of the social work profession “to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty.” Our primary goal is to provide educational opportunities and training for growth in practicing within an anti-oppressive scope. Additionally, the Group will assist in assessing the diversity among the NASW-NE members, committees, and board.
We offer processes by which social workers can voice concerns, elevate ideas and solutions, and connect with other social workers to change systems! This group provides listening sessions, a network of social workers working for social justice, amplify issues and solutions, and update and apply pressure to decision makers. We are empowered by the NASW-NE board of directors to make statements responding to situations involving oppression.
